AETNA And Acupuncture Coverage: Things To Know

January 6, 2022

Some Aetna policies have a very antiquated acupuncture coverage.

Which reads like this:

“Acupuncture in Lieu of Anesthesia.”

Weird, right?

This has to be left over from I don’t know when, 1980?  But in essence, its no coverage.

I’ve done 10 years of acupuncture — over 10,000 treatments.  Never have I done acupuncture instead of anesthesia.

Unfortunately, I’ve had people call up believing they have coverage because their policy reads something like this:

‘Acupuncture covered in some instances under some conditions.’

Or a vague entry like that.  So, yes, techncally it covers ‘An’ instance and ‘A’ condition.  But not one that is viable or really usable.

Its always important when checking benefits to check not only if you are covered but what you are covered for.
